Boomkat Product Review:
Electronic polymath RareBit takes his name from Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, "a turn of the century comic strip by Winsor McCay in which each week, an unnamed character would wake up from an inexplicable dream at the peak moment of confusion." The Destroyer EP is a similarly entertaining, erratic and surreal experience. Opener 'Initation-Quitters-Freedom' sounds like the kinda bucolic 60s library jazz championed by Jonny Trunk et al, but the next track 'Aggro Crag', is sultry, glitched-out and resolutely modern disco-pop, all slick, shiny surfaces and Nintendo-inspired arpeggios. So the EP continues, inconsistent in style, but consistent in quality - by the time it finishes we've journeyed through stuttering R&B, psychedelic piano mantras, drifting synth reveries, and plenty else besides. The overall effect omewhere between musique concrete and wonky post-FlyLo hip-hop, making for an intriguing release indeed.
