Boomkat Product Review:
Killer Afro-Futurist brilliance from LA’s Clipping., channelling the Drexciyan legend in a strong expansion of their 2017 single
On the original 2017 track, the trio riff on the tragic but empowering speculation that the babies of pregnant mothers thrown from slave ships in the Atlantic survived to grow gills and become Drexciyan wave jumpers. On the original cut they give strong nods to James Stinson’s mythos with a stylised intro and subaquatic sound design giving way to some of the deepest rhymes on the topic out there, before Shabazz Palaces jump in on a new track ‘Aquacode Databreaks’ which wears its electro groove even more proudly, and in a way that echoes Drexciya’s early West Coast electro influence from the likes of Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover in the best style.
‘Drownt’ then seals the deal with another gripping example of illusive, splashy but minimal sound design suitably harnessing the triad’s fluid flow. Better yet the instrumentals are included on the B-side. Bit of a no brainer for all Drexciya fans!
