Boomkat Product Review:
Ryan L. West's Rival Consoles project fuses IDM influences with expansive orchestral soundtracking, usually within the framework of a single piece. Tracks like 'Seventeen' and 'Juncture' take an Aphex-inspired post-acid production style and weave in string ensemble textures, without ever sounding jarring or inappropriate whilst going about it. 'Kitsch' might cross a line for some people, setting fairly garish synth tones against choppy symphonics ad a junglist breakbeat. Fortunately West pulls it together for the more sedate intro of 'Vari' which itself ultimately succumbs to slice'n'dice electronica treatments. Rounding the EP off, closer 'Acid' makes no such attempts at fusing styles, opting for a kind of Rephlex-style take on the genre suggested by its title. Recommended.
