Boomkat Product Review
Alphapup have been a reliable source of all things odd, beat-driven and West Coastal for some time now (if you’ve never heard Ricci Rucker you’d better remedy that pronto) and this debut from Jonwayne is another golden egg in their rich and diverse canon. ‘The Death of Andrew’ in typical Alphapup style is a grimy slice of other-world rap instrumentals, and coughs and splutters its way through its meager twenty-minute duration as if it’s emerging from the lungs of a dying puppeteer. With beats as cracked and decomposed as Clouddead at their most blunted, Jonwayne adds flourishes of theatrics not unlike Jacaszek giving an alluring widescreen flicker to sounds that, more often than not, are coming from a totally different angle. The very definition of ‘left field’, this record is the kind of release that gives me great hope in the future of music. Seems like people really can shake things up every once in a while, after all.
