The Complete BBC Peel Sessions
Now it is strange for me seeing this album out – reading the tracklisting on the back I can even remember what I was doing when I first heard these sessions back when they were originally broadcast on John Peel’s show… yep, I was listening to the radio… incredibly intently! The Delgados were always one of my favourite bands of of the twee lofi indiepop movement, if not my favourite – I can remember quite clearly going into convulsions when I first heard ‘Under Canvas Under Wraps’ (on Peel’s show unsurprisingly) and the band were cemented in my mind as pure quality. What people might not be aware of is that the Delgados were also responsible for the Chemikal Underground label, who in turn were responsible for releasing Mogwai’s seminal ‘Young Team’ album, Arab Strap’s debut and Bis’s fabulous ‘Kandy Pop’ ep among other lynchpins of the mid 1990s scene. Enough reminiscing – if you’re into lo-fi indie then you have simply got to own this 2 disc set, especially with the early tracks, these session versions sound better than the ‘studio’ recordings, the energy and punky attitude translating perfectly. Magic.
