In answer to the long-running experimental radio show’s request to make music with artists he hadn’t worked with before, Kalma soon opted to jam with Chiu & Honer based on his appreciation of their debut union, a daydreamy fusion of acoustic and electronic sources, ‘Recordings from the Åland Islands’ (2022). With the aim of creating 20 minutes of new music for the show, Kalma in Australia, and the others in LA, began building upon each other’s unfinished sketches, eventually producing a piece for the show, broadcast in September, 2022, that would lead their creative union to blossom into the near hour long bliss out titled ‘The Closest Thing to Silence.’
Kalma, Chiu & Honer’s natural back and forth process of remotely improvising on one another’s sketches would come to form etheric collages unstitched from time and space and existing in their own slipstream of sublime thought. From his base in Mullumbimby, Australia, Kalma introduced samples of his archival recordings made at the GRM, Paris, 1976-80, alongside his palette of synth, processed didgeridoo and other wind instrument, to Chiu’s modular array, organ and field recordings, and Honer’s viola and chimes. The results are rich with a timeless appeal that transcends era and genre, snarling from voluminous clouds of fourth world ambient jazz (‘Ten Hour Wave’), to elegantly pulsating, pastoral synth waltz (‘Dizzy Ditty’), and a special lien of imaginative soundscaping or world building illustrated by the fathomless rendering of ‘Une Ombre Légère’, the immersive scenes of floating choral synth and lush field recordings in ‘A Treasure Chest’, and their trilling finale ’Stack Attack’.
