Boomkat Product Review:
Gavin Russom returns to DFA with yet another new outlet for his dancefloor expeditions. The Crystal Ark project craftily juxtaposes two seemingly disparate but cunningly well woven inspirations. On the one hand we have the hypnotic repetition inspired by a one month trip to Brazil where he soaked up the native funk carioca and atabaque drumming, while on the other we have the synthetic infusion of Maurice Engelen (aka Praga Khan) and Nikki Van Lierop's (together known as the legendary Lords Of Acid) ripe Belgian New Beat sound circa 1991. He combines the two with consummate skill and vision, matching their hypnotic dancefloor potential in a narcotic interzone of body enveloping and infinitely arpeggiated sinewaves offset with layers of circular percussive rhythms for a deliriously tranced-out rave effect. The 12-minute composition 'The City Never Sleeps' also features a rich seam of NYC heritage in the brooding Joey Beltram style bassline, complemented by dream-state vocals from Viva Ruiz and finished with a smudged analog effect with Russom written right to its mama coca-fuelled core. Brilliant tracks. Recommended!
