Boomkat Product Review:
Notorious punk blunt instruments Fucked Up deliver their latest full-length via Matador, having recently earned themselves much press coverage for inciting riots wherever they plug in their amps. Fittingly, the band's sound has a default setting that's conducive to blustering aural punishment, all capped off by the snarling, hoarse-throated vocals of frontman Pink Eyes, who prevents Fucked Up's most melodious moments from having too much of a hold over the band. The otherwise very tuneful choruses of 'Black Albino Bones' are counterbalanced by suitably agonising screeching from the singer, but he's not always got a hold on the album: 'Golden Seal' mixes simple, rhythmic piano chords with morphing synths and horn timbres for an odd, krautrock-influenced instrumental interlude, arriving as an unlikely third track, breaking up the hardcore onslaught. Adding a little more balance, additional vocal contributions come from the currently ubiquitous Vivian Girls, who inject a little oestrogen into the chest-beating fury that presides over much of the album.
