Boomkat Product Review:
If your name was John Smith wouldn't you be tempted to use something else as your recording nom de plume? Well, so far having a bit of a non-descript handle hasn't held this guy back too much, having at one point scored himself a support slot with iconic folk explorer John Martyn. This first 7" emission comes sandwiched between that gig and a forthcoming tour with another great British guitar legend, Davey Graham. Impressive credentials, but what does Smith's music actually sound like? Well, the soulful acoustic outing 'The Bird And The Worm' is a certifiably lovely piece of '70s-singer/songwriter folk, but the real draw here has to be the Queens Of The Stone Age cover on the B-side. Smith takes the QOTSA standard 'No One Knows' with a mightily impressive arrangement on his guitar, turning the whole thing into a nifty ragtime-style romp. Ace.
