David Lynch delivers a new album of "modern blues" following up 2011's divisive 'Crazy Clown Time'. The visionary film maker and "multimedia artist" recorded 'The Big Dream' at his Asymmetrical Studio with engineer Dean Hurley assisting on production and backing instrumentation, and Swedish chanteuse Lykke Li cropping up on a bonus track. The vibe is perfectly measured throughout, casting Lynch's nasally tones against plangent, sweeping guitar strums, moping dub basslines and subtle but beautifully effective electronic backdrops that capture the sense of paranoia, claustrophobia and intrigue which equally infuse his flicks with their dark, aching soul. There are obvious peaks in the torch song sparkle of his single tracks, 'Are You Sure' and the stomping 'Star Dream Girl', but our biggest highlights have to be the skulking, almost trap-styled ace, 'Last Call', and the fluttering trance-like synth motifs which leaven the scowling swagger of 'Wishin' Well', and when he really gets down to rock on the the chugging 'Say It', or the sneery delivery of 'Sun Can't Be Seen No More' he's got us by the short and curlys. Factor in the the atmospheric panorama of 'The Line It Curves' and the lonely soul of 'I'm Waiting Here' with Lykke Li and you're looking at a satisfying set.
