Boomkat Product Review:
The merits of a greatest hits package are always going to be in contention when the band in question has such a short discography, but this double disc release goes about as far as it reasonably could, bringing together 'the hits' alongside the band's Peel Session recordings, plus 'She's Lost Control' and 'Transmission' as performed on Something Else in September of 1979. Finally, there's a brief interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris tacked onto the end of the second disc. It goes without saying, but most Joy Division fans will be familiar with a good deal of this already, and clearly it's aimed principally at relative newcomers to the band's catalogue. Beyond that inevitable criticism, it's hard to dispute the validity of a record that offers such a consistent, concentrated dose of great, great songs. At a runtime of under an hour for the first disc, the compilers aren't maxing out the storage space of the CD for its own sake, but rather assembling a proper album's worth of material, and while the best way to start digesting Joy Division's music would surely be via the original albums themselves, this package provides a perfectly respectable one-stop alternative.
