Boomkat Product Review:
DAF are one of the most influential groups to have emerged from Germany during the post-punk and industrial heyday of the late 1970's early 80's. Their homoerotic aesthetic (leather, sweat & muscles) and intensely physical electronic sound is hailed as a precursor and major influence on the German and Belgian techno/EBM sound, besides a wave of British and American bands in the following years. 'The Best Of' doesn't require much explanation, it's a compendium of their most essential and seminal tracks, including the minimalist masterpiece 'The Mussolini' alongside more Conny Plank produced hits 'Sex Unter Wasser', 'Ich Will', 'Verschwande Deine Jugend', 'Alle Gegen Alle' and much more over a 20 track album. DAF's sound is both immediately direct, through Robert Gorl's hypnotically effective electronics, and subvertively political via Gabi Delgado's often sarcastic but close-to-the-bone lyrics, making for a notoriously noxious combination that has won over a legion of dissaffected goths and industrialists . DAF are true pioneers of their sound and quite possibly one of the most influential acts of their time alongside groups like Suicide or Throbbing Gristle . Recommended!
