Boomkat Product Review:
*Now On CD* Let's be honest - hip-hop is not renowned for delivering the come-back goods. More often than not a whiff of expectation is roundly punctured by some piss-poor production and phoned-in rhymes, all existing for reasons that are purely fiscal. It therefore comes as something of a surprise to recount that the new LP from hip-hop legends the Ultramagnetic MC's is pretty knob-on. Featuring the original line-up of Kool Keith, Ced Gee, Moe Love, TR Love, plus Tim Dog and newcomer Grafiq Malachi Sebek, 'The Best Kept Secret' has a lot to live up to in the eyes of the hip-hop cabal - and for the most part it's bang on target. Juxtaposing Kool Keith's addictive flow with the more sluggish rhymes of Ced Gee, tracks such as 'The Plaques', 'Late Night Rumble' and 'Pop Bottles' will have you nodding like a bad 'un and slipping into the baggy jeans as if there's no tomorrow. At times overlapping with the territory of 'Critical Breakdown', 'Mechanism Nice' and the ace 'Vibrato' thoroughly relive old glories. If you're a diehard Magnetic fan you'll likely find something to grumble about, but for everyone else this is anything but a let down.
