Boomkat Product Review:
A group comprised of Wilco band members John Stirratt and Pat Sansone, The Autumn Defense are openly besotted with old-fashioned soft rock, which is hardly the sort of thing most bands would find themselves boasting about, but these guys know how to make MOR sound appealing. On the Paul Simon styled opener 'Canyon Arrow' you might find yourself thinking you are actually listening to Wilco, the combination of Stirratt and Sansone's voices oddly making for a decent approximation of Jeff Tweedy's. The spectre of Wilco inevitably hovers over the entirety of this record, with that band's lead guitarist Nels Cline making an appearance on 'We Would Never Die', virtuosically tearing up the fretboard with a clean tone that would prohibit most players from achieving the kind of sustain and articulation he does. While for the large part it'd be unlikely that anyone would lay claim to these songs being in the same league as the Jeff Tweedy material these guys are used to playing in their day jobs, certain pieces like the REM-ish 'Winterlight' and the beautifully orchestrated likes of 'Spend Your Life' and 'Criminal' sound just magnificent, with the latter two soaking up some particularly luscious '70s-sounding string arrangements. Highly recommended.
