Boomkat Product Review:
The Aquarium is an odd name for a band, but then The Aquarium is not your usual band. Comprised of Jason Hutto on electric piano, keys and vocals and Laura Harris on drums, the two manage to make a strange noise indeed. The electric piano all manages to be routed through a cheap distortion pedal to create a sound not far removed from the guitar, it just sounds ‘wrong’ somehow. This gives the duo a distinctive sound and while it’s been done many times before, it seems to gel with their outlook quite magically. The songs themselves are somewhere between classic Krautrock and fractured pop of the Firey Furnaces variety – they never destroy the structure so much as the Furnaces, but the sentiment is there. A mixture of vocal and instrumental tracks, ‘The Aquarium’ is a varied album with the instrumentals nodding to beat-chopper extraordinaire Four Tet with their skittering drum patterns and bleepy retro synthplay and the vocal tracks residing more definitely in the land of indie, with certain tracks even bringing to mind the Pixies of all bands. Another success from US hardcore veterans Dischord, ‘The Aquarium’ is a beautiful curiosity, the sort of album which doesn’t need to shout on the rooftops or throw bricks in your face, it just slowly takes over without so much as a whisper of conceit. Excellent.
