Boomkat Product Review:
3Shades is a Munich-based band that features Markus Acher of The Notwist, alongside fellow Tied & Tickled Trio member Carl Oesterheld and Dis*ka's Ivica Vucelic. While the intricate, electronically-crafted post-rock sound s you'd expect from such an ensemble are all present and correct, additionally the album throws a leftfield hip hop contingent into the mix, with guest spots from Mike Ladd and Fat Jon. The album also ventures out into slightly more psychedelic terrain from time to time, most comprehensively so on the ace instrumental 'El Topo', whose Jodorowsy-referncing title should give some clues as to what the players had in mind. Arguably the best thing here is the Acher-fronted title track, which comes closest to sounding like an all-out Notwist song, easing into a lyrical, slacker-ish sense of melancholy littered with quiet brass, glockenspiel and mellotron that'll have you craving a swift follow-up to The Devil, You + Me.
