Formerly known as Mozart's Sister, SOPHIE collaborator Cecile Believe levels up with an EP of delicate, twitchy and impeccably written electro pop. One for fans of Oklou, Caroline Polachek or Charli XCX.
Performing vocals and co-writing SOPHIE's 'Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides' and contributing backing vocals to Kero Kero Bonito's 'TOTEP', Cecile Believe's already made her mark on the hyperpop landscape, but her solo material's not to be sniffed at, either. 'Tender the Spark' will be noticed because it includes a tearjerker of a track dedicated to SOPHIE - heartfelt, folky ballad 'The Pearl - but it's not the best introduction to the EP. Elsewhere, the Canadian artist has far more fun with the sugary hyperpop template, simmering the most acceptable elements into a stew of whooshing A24 electro and soaring vocals.
Opener 'Ponytail' is an inverted take on familiar tropes, like a track from Taylor Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department' stripped for parts and disrupted with wonky percussion and cynical lyrics. It's smart material - the tape warping is a neat touch - but Cecile Believe hits her stride on the edgier 'Red Brick', a track that takes advantage of her powerful voice. Setting her tongue-in-cheek operatic cries against euphoric pads and tender trance risers, you can work out why SOPHIE had Cecile Believe in her crosshairs.
