Boomkat Product Review:
Telekinesis is the songwriter project of Michael Lerner, who for this impeccable pop record teams up with Death Cab For Cutie and Decemberists producer Chris Walla. Each song on the album was tackled entirely over the course of a single day, after which Lerner and Walla would move on to the next one. This sort of immediacy translates brilliantly into the fabric of the record, with early cuts like 'Rust' and the majestic 'Coast Of Carolina' throwing a whole fisherman's rucksack worth of hooks your way within the first five minutes or so. The pace and intensity is maintained right up to the Veckatimest-alike production of 'Awkward Kisser' and the very Ben Gibbard-esque intro to 'Foreign Rooms' which offer a breather before we head off into the mellotron-fuelled pop universe of 'Great Lakes'. The album just keeps on delivering killer melodies and the sort of songwriting standard that surely wins Lerner a place among mainstream US indie contemporaries like The Shins and (inevitably) Death Cab themselves.
