Boomkat Product Review:
Curated by Eks and A Flooded Need, "Tedium" is an impressively diverse set of sounds that touches on electro-acoustic music, experimental ambient, deconstructed club, punky noise and damaged downtempo. Features tracks from CECILIA, Elvin Brandhi, DJ Die Soon, Sara Persico & Xavier Lopez and more.
Multi-genre compilations are a tough beast to wrangle - all too often they're buried by their own ambition, floundering from track to track without a grounding element to hold our attention. Thankfully, this latest 23-track set from the A Flooded Need network is a rare long-form compilation thats diversity and purpose never derails it. It might be down to the fact that musically, while its picks are wildly divergent from each other, everything seems to spring from a similar experimentally-minded root - so although Sara Persico and Xavier Lopez's early highlight 'Dreamwork' is fractured modular electronics, choppy vocals and mutant percussion, it leads into E-Cor Ensemble's cybernetic 'EN03' all too well. The sounds are emerging from different parts of the musical map - Persico and Lopez's from the electro-acoustic world and E-Cor Ensemble's from sound design and IDM - but there's an exploratory thread that's easy to follow.
Eks, who helped assemble the compilation, takes a hard left turn with his own 'Swerve on it', using dusted '90s East Coast breaks and rap snippets before ceding the track to harsh overdriven feedback, scraped metal doom and ASMR crackles. GOLPESAR's 'Condolence' is chilly and unsettling, using sharp digital synthesis to cut thru a bleak atmosphere made up of dissonant harp plucks and rumbling beat abstraction, while Elvin Brandhi's eardrum-piercing 'You're Not Welcome Anymore' punctures the bleak mood with rattling beats, spoken word vocals and broken toybox chiptune melodies.
Stick with the comp until the end, and you'll hit DJ Die Soon's brilliantly demented 'Didokabotu', that spikes an mbira lead with distorted drums and lysergic oscillator squeaks, and CECELIA's ace 'Real Estate', a Req-style mangled illbient jammer that's guided thru thick blunt smoke by the Montreal artist's nonchalant vocals.
