Boomkat Product Review:
Black Acre's Clap! Clap! fathoms unique, Afro-futurist mutations on his island-minded debut album 'Tayi Bebba'.
Under the moniker Clap! Clap!, Italian producer Cristiano Crisci has arrived at a whirlwind fusion of African-inspired rhythmelody and far-flung urban groove on a trio of well-received singles, and 'Tayi Bebba' is the project's most impressive, colourful dispatch to date. It feels like the Awesome Tapes From Africa and Celluloid catalogues have been stripped for parts and reassembled within the prism of modern footwork and ghetto electro.
Shredding and punctuating exotic source material in some sort of air-locked VR fantasy, the album is structured around the conceit of tropical island ecosystem inhabited by grateful Taiyyans who "propagate the the lunar magnetism of the island" thru chant and percussion. Thusly the tracks follow a logic from the loping 808 ritual of 'The Holy Cave' to the airborne polyrhythms of closer 'Kuj Yato', twisting back and forth between old skool NYC electro boom, shattered Shangaan disco, and intricately detailed 4th world/ambient panoramas lifting us out of this mundane reality and plonking us in the middle of fantastical new worlds.
