Surkit Chamber - The Melding
To the surprise and delight of many, Detroit legend Marty Bonds aka Reel By Real returns from a 20 years absence with a ace set of nine new tracks. Mojuba's A.R.T.Less department have respectfully pushed the boat out, enlisting Abdul Haqq - whose Third Earth Visual Arts have adorned sleeves for Red Planet, UR and Transmat among many others - for a very classy sleeve design worthy of the funked-up, Sci-Fi-inspired machine music within. It almost feels like this could have been made in 1991, back when Marty was editing, remixing and producing alongside the likes of Shake, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson; the flow of his tracks is still instinctively attuned and hasn't lost any of that starry-eyed and searching Detroit quality. Highlights come from the start with the bold breakbeat experiment 'I Won't Follow' and the darkly sexy 'Look At Me', then there's intuitive groove riders like 'Switchback' or 'Stow Away', but the best have to be those magical, classic-sounding electroid joints like 'Glass' and the moving synth scapes of closer 'WBX'. TIP!
