Boomkat Product Review:
Magisterial slow techno prowess from Manchester resident, Black Merlin, sustaining his singular brand of glacial pressure for Tel Aviv’s Malka Tuti, backed with beatless Wata Igarashi remix
Rolling on from his ‘Scape One’ 12” for Artificial Dance, and notable outings for Berceuse Heroique, Offen Music, and Pinkman, Merlin extends his tour of European dance houses with two lustrous wind tunnel techno trips destined for the best dark rooms.
Both taking up to and over 10 minutes to execute their function, ’Surface Air’ arrives with vanta-black synth pads and pulsating arps yoked to his signature 100bpm tempo and tweaked out to the lip-biting point, while ‘The Mohican Trance Leopard’ tramples a fine line between heads-down drive and more psychoactive cosmic synth chaos. Wata Igarashi’s remix of ’Surface To Air’ jettisons the kicks and angles more skyward for a lusher, melodramatic finale.
