Boomkat Product Review:
Formerly released on 7" as part of the 'Surf's Up Fun Pack' (which also included a T-shirt, postcards and a badge) this summery blast from Vivian Girls scores a digital release just in time for the start of the sunny weather. 'Surfin' Away' is a glorious slice of echo chamber bubblegum that has more in common with The Breeders or Black Tambourine than early Beach Boys, The Ventures or actual surf rock of any variety. The song is typical of the band's primitive, thrashy approach to writing and recording, yet somehow a great single emerges from all the fizz and ineptitude. Next up comes 'Second Date', a similarly feel-good ditty that sticks around for exactly the right length of time, breezing to a close just before the two-minute mark.
