Boomkat Product Review:
Featuring the first entirely new compositions from Rothko since 2007's Eleven Stages Of Intervention (released via Bip_H0p), this EP was recorded over two weekends late last year. Given that there's a full-length in the pipeline (due towards the end of this year) these five pieces might give some indication of where the band are headed. 'Sunset' immediately inspires thanks to its combination of classic Rothko bass sculpting and urgent, motoring tom rhythms. From here onwards there's plenty more to get wrapped up in too, with 'Broken Sleep' serving up a more dismantled, beautifully ambient feel that leads into the warm, horizontal haze of 'REM Sleep'. The dual electric-bass hallmark takes a more naturalistic form again for 'Wake To Tomorrow', plucking out loose, very improvised sounding patterns before 'Sunrise' launches into a more epic post-rock mode for the EP's powerful, building finale.
