Sun Baked Snow Cave
I know this might be a few months old now but what a corker - and given the title and overriding theme on the record what better time to grab hold of it than now, when snow might be just around the corner. Okay okay I know, it's probable that we'll never experience snow again in dear old blighty with global warming and all that jazz, but a girl can dream right? Anyway for this snowy expedition our doomy guides are none other than oddball Japanese noise God Masami Akita (aka Merzbow) and fellow countrymen and dark harbingers of doom Boris. It's their second collaboration after the crushing (and appropriately titled) 'Megatone', and takes their sound into further more insane reaches of the noise spectrum. Don't get the wrong idea though, this isn't noise like you'd normally expect from the man Akita, oh no this is far subtler and in the end far more affecting. Indeed the first few minutes are close to silence; rumbles and hums which build into screeching and distortion. Before long we're treated to that unique guitar drone which Boris have somehow patented, but rather then clean and deep, we've instead got the thick dense sounds piped through Akita's chain of buzzing electronics. Comprising of one hour long epic, this is a journey which needs to be heard in its entirety to truly understand, as it bubbles and grinds through intense noise and surprising minimalist crackles and fizzes. It's a shockingly intense and hugely enjoyable addition to both musicians bulging catalogues and should be instantly checked out by any self-respecting noise or drone fans immediately. Utter sickness, snow has never sounded this menacing.
