STUMPS second version
Recorded live in Berlin in 2022, 'Stumps (second version)' is the most recent rendition of veteran Swedish drummer and bandleader Sven-Åke Johansson's acclaimed magnum opus.
One of Europe's first free jazz drummers, Johansson has a fascinating trajectory - not only did he play in Peter Brötzmann's legendary 'Machine Gun' trio, but he was part of Tangerine Dream in its earliest incarnation, and more recently has collaborated with Jan Jelinek. He regards the compositions he uses to guide his 'Stumps' project as his best writing for a small group, and put together a team his favorite collaborators for this performance: trumpeter Axel Dörner, bassist Joel Grip, Simon Sieger on piano and horn player Pierre Borel. And although the 'Stumps' material has appeared before - a recording from Berlin's Au Topsi Pohl emerged in 2022 - this second version, captured at Jazzfest in Berlin, is a more recent reading.
As is to be expected, Johansson's skittering rhythms are the draw here, and the open-ended compositions play to his strengths, allowing his collaborators space to veer off piste while pivoting on the percussive momentum.
