Vienna-born, Rotterdam-based artist Leonard Prochazka, aka Geier Aus Stahl, comes correct with his debut album of grotty, lo-lite electro. RIYL Das Ding, DAF, Xeno & Oaklander, Cold Cave et al.
Since 2016, Prochazka has been using his Geier Aus Stahl project to explore the relationship between electronic and acoustic instruments - blending synths and drum machines with chunky live percussion and deadpan vocals. "Strapezen und Genesung" is an unmistakably throwback record (if someone told us it was recorded in 1983 we'd believe 'em) but Prochazka's influences are from the top tier of cold wave electronics, industrial and vintage electro pop. There are few concessions made here, Prochazka's clearly a keen listener, and combines bubbling analog synth FX with ruff cycling beatbox loops and precise kit drums (he was a drummer in a former life), tying everything together with his resonant vocals.
The album's most successful moments come when Prochazka slips into a narrative mode, hinting at VHS-damaged suspense film scores on eerie cuts like the almost beatless 'Sagen mit Wörter', or the grim 'Für immer'. These moments transcend the project's clearly marked influences, and start to pull into a satisfyingly unexpected direction - the former track particularly feels like an exceptional re-synthesis of vintage German industrial-electro sounds, assembled with the jagged avant oddness of Einstürzende Neubauten. Minimal Wave devotees, don't miss this.
