Boomkat Product Review:
Despite his roots in Americana (he was born in born in Wyoming), Jeb Loy Nichols currently resides in Wales, and this latest album finds the country/soul/reggae fusionist teaming up with young British jazz musicians and a string quartet. The resultant confluence of sounds presents an easy-going though not insubstantial backdrop for Nichols' songs, occasionally bringing to mind Lambchop's more understated moments. The album embarks with the slick, almost Zero 7-like arrangement of 'Sometime Somewhere Somebody' and slips into a warm, downbeat nook for much of its duration, revealing a compelling writer at the heart of all this through moments like 'The Day That Never Came', which despite disguising itself as a casual, lounge-funk ditty has more in common with Bob Dylan's recent output, at its core.
