Boomkat Product Review:
Since 2005 Mark E's productions have increasingly become the toast of a House scene looking for slower and more seductive tempos without losing the all important impact. Following two killer CD compilations of his celebrated 12" releases, Ghostly International serve his long overdue debut album. 'Stone Breaker' features nine forceful but funky mid-tempo productions primed for the 'floor. It's not really a home listening album, that is unless you've got a house full and everyone is lashed. It *almost* works as a DJ set in itself, striding from the scene-setting slow pound of 'Archway', slipping into the hypnotic disco grip of 'Black Country Saga', and building up to the slamming loops of 'Belvide Beat'. 'Quatro' cools it with typically measured pacing, while 'Got To Get Me There' transports us to the centre of a writhing, jacking Chicago party with pure drum pressure, and 'Deny This' floats off to the Badalamenti-minset of 'Black Moon'. Just as easily they can be broken down into highly effective DJ tools, but there's a steady seam of dancefloor soul which connects all the tracks very neatly.
