Boomkat Product Review:
The excellent Color Tapes present Mystery Plane’s 1981 demo tapes of “sublime minimal basement krauty synth” intentions with Still Life.
Inspired by bands like Neu, Amon Duul II and Vienna period Ultravox, Catherine O’Connell (vocals/synths) Gary Ramon (guitars/recording), Mark Harvey (drum machine/vocals) and Gerald O’Connell (guitar), with the Still Life demo they committed their intentions to make literate, melodic and political pop music following a stint as 3D5 - whose 2nd guitarist Porl Thompson went on to join The Cure.
By evidence of this LP, they arguably achieved their goal, although finding wider success was a slightly different matter. Still, we have this very fine collection, covering authentically kraut-sounding flights of fancy alongside sweeter kosmic pop psychedelia and lean minimal wave dancers powered by a wickedly tinny Boss DR-55.
