Boomkat Product Review:
The mighty Clone empire re-release one of the hottest ever west coast electro rap bombs. Ashamed to admit that I only heard 'Professor X (Saga)' for the first time about five years ago (I must have been sleeping in 1988 when this first dropped on the Unknown DJ's Techno Kut imprint) and even then the only proof I had that the original 12" existed was when Justin Robinson dropped it on one the more essential mixes on radio 1. Back then I wasn't even sure who made the music, was it the Egyptian Lover or DJ's Unknown or Battlecat? In time it became obvious, it's the work of the Arabian Prince. The original track is a superior variation on the X-Men cut up technique fusing some tasty Kraftwerk samples over a throbbing 808 beat with dirty slammin' moog styled basslines = the sickness. Remember when Arab came back with some amazing reworks of his seminal classic 'Innovator' a year or so ago? Well, the new mixes and tracks on this are even hotter. Unlike Egyptian Lover who settles for modern day reworks of his classics, the Arabian Prince blows away even the most atuned modern electro darklords, any deejay who drops the instrumental cut on 'Statix' will get mugged for their copy in lighting speed. That's just the b-side >>> the main cuts on 'Statix' and 'Rekonstruktx' are awesome updates on the original west coast electro rap sound as best typified on cuts like the Wreckin' Cru's 'Surgery' - I know it's gonna be a shock to you to know that I feel this 12" is one of the most essential reissues/comebacks in recent electro history, but there you have it.
