Where his previous album wallowed in the darkest recesses of post-punk pop composition, this one is still super heavy-hearted, but almost weightlessly so. It was recorded by David Lynch collaborator Dean Hurley and features viola from italian composer Vittorio Demarin meshed with Hungtai's synth and saxophone in four widescreen, airborne compositions laced with an aching sense of melancholia. If we were to read into the music, the sleeve art and Hungtai's brief statement on the bandcamp page, we'd wager that the album is about displacement of identity, time, and emotion. Manifest in its taste for keening, blurry harmonic dissonance and ability to seemingly make time elastic, reflective of the long, perilous journeys - both physical and emotional - of migrants searching for new, better lives and lands, but also the incredibly long-scale, entropic nature of tectonic patterns and the changing tides of time. We really can't fault its scope or effect. It's absolutely, heart-wrenchingly gorgeous. If you're not welling up by closer 'Time Washes Away Everything' you might need to have a word.
