Boomkat Product Review:
A veritable super-group made up of members Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Charles Hayward (This Heat), John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack) and improv player Pat Thomas it would be hard for About Group to misstep given their pedigree. The group originally formed for a recording for the really rather great Treader label, but after a handful of live performances, they got together to record this altogether more unexpected beast. Given the players involved I suppose I had an idea in my head of how it would sound and let me tell you now, it’s not what you’d expect. Alexis Taylor’s voice carries each song, and the focus is a certain brand of low-slung 60s rock music that’s far from the more usual avant garde-isms of the group’s members. Take ‘Lay Me Down’ for example; while you can just about hear a synth going bonkers in the background, this is a song that wouldn’t be out of place on a White Stripes album, and that’s no bad thing. These songs might echo classic rock at their heart, but the expert performance and innovative small touches make it a smidgen more memorable than the description suggests.
