Boomkat Product Review:
Posh Isolation rack up some of Jonas Rönnberg a.k.a. Varg’s most sought-after, absorbing material with a necessary vinyl edition of his Star Alliance boxset - arguably his definitive solo album statement; sounding out a bleak, expansive space between Vatican Shadow’s melancholic techno, the tonal physicality of Pan Sonic/Ø/Mika Vainio, and the spectral presence of Thomas Köner’s widest designs.
Since issuing Star Alliance the Scandinavian scene lynchpin has also released another couple of pearls in the ჟინვალი tape as ვარგ, and a stark techno 12” on the Electron Grammofon label, which both work as prime further listening if this one gets your goat.
Over some 21 tracks split on two discs, he explores the finest interstices of a cold, Northern Electronic sound, embracing beautifully brooding chamber synth vignettes in the faults between granite techno slabs and heart-rending black metal gestures consistently executed with a detached, crooked sleight of hand.
