Boomkat Product Review:
The mysterious Sog already left an impression on us with their debut Speicher instalment a couple of months back, but this new offering for Kompakt has certainly done much to pique our interest in one of the label's most unusual acts. Opening track "2.1" really does seem to re-define minimalism, a bare-bones arrangement of kickdrum, bassline and hi-hats looping out into infiniti with nothing but a gradual shift in percussive emphasis and an almost random one-note stab dropping intermittently for company. It's highly self-restrained, confident, alluring material that sounds immense at high volume. "2.2" on the flip takes the same track and adds a wobbly bass-drum, sticking to the same rigid agenda with incredibly subtle shifts forcing to keep your ears peeled for effect. Brilliant stuff - our favourite Speicher in quite some time.
