Boomkat Product Review:
Valerio Tricoli, Stefano Pilia and Claudio Rocchetti’s improvising trio, 3/4 had Been Eliminated, indulge Oren Ambarchi’s Black Truffle with their 6th album of metamorphosing, otherworldly composition, recorded in Bologna and Berlin over several years.
They filter and combine more ideas and movement in 30 minutes than many others might in twice the length and breadth across Speak To Me, and all thanks to their rigorous method of recording and meticulous editing - which is executed by Tricoli, arguably one of the world’s most gifted meta-editor/composers, in a manner that recalls the methods of Faust, Teo Macero and This Heat
Nekyia is perfect example of how they somehow hold a semblance of coherence with hardly any repetition of sounds. OK, there may be passages of patterned phrasing but check closely and they’re bristling with organic variegation and always roving into another space with he same sleight of hand that makes Tricoli’s solo work so highly regarded.
However, the 16 minutes of I Am A Prune Cake On A Background Of Semolina neatly changes tactic, initially sounding more like a conventional band, albeit one playing in adjacent, darkened rooms, with rustling guitar, drifting vocals and forlorn horns diffused in a shoegaze reverie for the first 5 minutes, and then swept out into more abstract figures with characters, voices, phrases drifting in and out, up and down thru the sound field with ineffable black magick.
