Boomkat Product Review:
Seriously vibey set of woozy club back room moods from Nick León's Space Tapes label. Post Burial ambient, if you like.
Don't be alarmed if you haven't heard of a lot of the names on this one, NAAFI alum Nick León knows exactly what he's doing and has put together a set of tracks that's more coherent than most single artist albums we get thru the gates. Finding a sweet spot between druggy, dubby ambient, trip-hop, footwork and weird club music, the compilation maintains a lifted, positive mood without once resorting to cloying emotional cheese.
It kicks off with the psychedelic, phasing 'Warm Bless' from Treasure Teeth, drags through TIDUR.'s low-lite slow jungle 'Callisto', stops in an AFX-but-make-it-illbient space with Johnny From Space's 'Bender', highlights footwork legend DJ Earl's versatility on the time dilating 'Slow+Fast' and reminds us very fondly of Burial's best bits with opal°'s 'Blue Glow', without actually sounding like Burial? Love it. Really this is the perfect soundtrack to missing the club: the aesthetic hallmarks are there with the utility stripped down to almost nothing.
