Boomkat Product Review:
You might not have come across alt-metal act Souvenir's Young America before, but bear with me before you switch off - the band is the original project of SMTG owner Jonathan Lee, better known as Anduin. While the music might not sound identical to Lee's newer records under the Anduin moniker, there's definitely an air of doomy ambience surrounding the chunky riffs and thumping beats giving the band an air of real originality. It's hard to find many metal bands these days who do anything more than simply crib from their more successful predecessors, so it's nice to hear Souvenir's Young America using a plethora of effects and synthesized drones to elevate their sound to something truly different. The fog of Angelo Badalamenti and the digital distortion of Fennesz is crumbling behind the seismic tempo shifts and waves of twisted electric and acoustic guitar - but it's when the band strip their sound back to almost nothing that they are most successful. On 'Twilight of the Steam' they pare it down to simply banjo, guitar and organ and it sounds almost blissful. Recommended!
