Boomkat Product Review:
Revered digger and 12th Isle co-cartographer Fergus Clark sifts out 45 minutes of precious goo inspired by the landscapes and atmospheres of the titular island in the Outer Hebrides.
Clark serves a spellbinding daisy chain of mutually spirited musicks ripe for soundtracking midsummer rituals on this keenly awaited GMT number. Ambient heads of a certain age may recognise the name Benbecula from the early ‘00s label of same mantle, behind BoC-related gems by Christ (who was actually an OG member of BoC), and this mix shares some of the label’s charms, but also projects far beyond, angled up and outward for a sorta magic carpet ride over mountains and the Atlantic spanning hypnotic vocal froth, free jazz, and finely-picked esoteric audities that beautifully harmonise and melt into eachother.
The selection is scholarly and yet sentimental, mapping out choice morsels from his considerable collection that take us from wind-weft, tongue-tip glossolalia and alternatively-tuned electro-folk filaments to soaring aerial sensations and full wingspan ambient-pop in its first half. The 2nd keeps it contemporary with what sounds something like more eaze bleating in autotune about the tape’s themes, to a lovely stripe of iridescent Irdial-esque techno and AI fractals where the joins between tunes become more imperceptible and illusive.
