Boomkat Product Review:
Celebrating their tenth anniversary as a label, Monika have commissioned their favourite artists to supply all-new, exclusive material, with previously unreleased music from Robert Lippok, Masha Qrella and Barbara Morgenstern among others. In addition to compiling the disc, Gudrun Gut supplies her own track, 'Monika In Polen', a piece of music approaching an oompah/techno hybrid, just one of many hard to categorize pieces littering this album. Robert Lippok scores pole position on the album, with his contribution 'The Heart Of Nuut Picked By The Crows Of Neu Koeln' hammering out a relentlessly propulsive beat, lurching closer to outright techno than the more post-rock flavoured work that characterises much of Lippok's music. In addition to the more established Monika regulars, a number of the 4 Women No Cry contributors make appearances on here too, with especially solid contributions from Rosario Blefari, Dorit Chrysler and Iris. One of the more unusual selections comes courtesy of Masha Qrella, who renders an acoustic cover version of Depeche Mode's 'Goodnight Lovers'. Apparently she doesn't feel particularly inclined to dress the piece up to any degree, but it works nevertheless. The compilation closes on Barbara Morgenstern's 'Wilderness', submitting further proof were any necessary, that Morgenstern's a safe pair of hands if ever there was one. By some measure she's one of Monika's most consistent artists, and 'Wilderness' presents another solid ballad for voice, piano and light electronics.
