Boomkat Product Review:
Never a label to give you an easy ride, this collection from Last Visible Dog strings together some seriously challenging works by a host of different sound artists, including Andrew Deutsch (who here collaborates with jazz maestro Joe McPhee), Sarah Peebles and the compilation's curator Ilya Monosov. This vehemently experimental set of sound works draws together instrumental, improvised oddities (such as Chie Mukai's excellent contribution) and the rustic microsound assembled by Monosov, whose 'Untitled Performance In Open Air' is a beautiful piece of John Cage-inspired minimalism. Nu-folk-ist Nick Castro takes on some far more esoteric works than the more straight-forward song-based material we're used to, fashioning magnificent experimental sound pieces (derived from location and environmental recordings), while Preston Swirnoff's glorious 'Maariv No.1' plays the disc out with an immense nine minutes of lolloping piano drone and spiralling echo. Excellent.
