Boomkat Product Review:
Best known for his work in Fu Manchu and as co-founder of Californian rock outfit Kyuss alongside a pre-Queens Of The Stone Age Josh Homme, Brant Bjork is an iconic figure in the 'desert rock' scene. Somera Sol finds Bjork hitting his stride as a psychedelic guitar hero and stoner songsmith accompanied by bassplayer Dylan Roche, guitarist Cortez plus fellow Kyuss (and QOTSA) alumnus Alfredo Hernandez on drums. The bluesy psychedelics of 'Turn Yourself On' should give plenty of clues as to the sort of journey Bjork and his band are on: this is a retro-minded rock odyssey replete with greasy pentatonic riffs and wailing guitar solos. There's something timeless about the kind of hard rocking Americana delved into here, which although by its very nature is situated firmly on well-trodden ground, has seldom been visited with such conviction this side of the '70s.
