Boomkat Product Review:
'Sochi 2014' is a beguiling, Muslimgauze/Vatican Shadow-esque tribute to Sochi's controversial Winter Olympics, conceived by Estonian Black Metal outsider Mihkel Kleis aka Edasi in his Istishhad guise. Relevant to Sochi's location on the Black Sea coast, close to the Caucasus and Turkey - a region historically cleft by religious, political and cultural rivalries - Istishhad's commemoration collages haunting samples of Islamic prayers with churning percussions, fireworks, and detached, distant synthlines every bit as enigmatic as the most obscure Muslimgauze pieces or Vatican Shadow's 'Ornamented Walls', which itself used extracts from Jordanian tapes. The prayers are included in the inlay, as is a image of the Olympic rings with a X across them. Make of that what you will. We're spellbound; you don't hear this kind of thing every day.
