Snowblind
Inspired by a 19th century Swedish expedition to the North Pole by balloon, field recordist Jacob Kirkegaard navigates through Arctic ambience on 'Snowblind' - one for fans of Thomas Köner and Lustmord, for sure.
In the summer of 1897, SA Andrée set off with a team of explorers to conquer the North Pole, intending to land his balloon safely beyond danger. Tragically, after two days in the air, the vessel crash landed in the ice, leaving the crew lost in perilous conditions. And after examining the photographs, diaries and scientific data Andrée left behind, Kirkegaard - who's previously documented Greenland's barren landscape and the eerie sonics of Chernobyl - was well prepared to re-create the terrifying environment. Frigid dark ambience won't be unfamiliar to fans of Köner's early trilogy of Arctic experiments, but while Kirkegaard hits a similar chord, his end goal is quite different. Looking to avoid obvious drama, he wanted to emphasize the feeling that "there's no escape", and does so by obscuring evocative environmental recordings with distorted bowed tones and ominous noise. If you're a fan of AMC's 'The Terror' season one, 'Snowblind' is a very apt alternative soundtrack.
