Boomkat Product Review:
Carl Craig and Basic Channel serve the best remixes from a strong haul of takes on Rhythm & Sound’s ‘See Mi Yah’ 7” set (although the Sleeparchive and Hallucinator mixes are choice, too)
Taking Poor People Must Work, Carl Craig offers a masterclass in deferred gratification, subtly setting the vocal in acres of room over a rugged Detroit electro-dub rhythm that builds and builds and then… oh fuck he didn’t just finish it there!? One for the crafty DJs.
On the flip Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald make clear the subtle distinctions between BC techno and the roots reggae dub of Rhythm & Sound on a Basic Reshape of See Mi Yah, squaring the roots of their sounds in propulsive bass and smeared horns, while the difference lies in their judicious use of FX to plangent, arid yet aqueous effect.
Like everything else they touch, this one’s aged damn well.
