Boomkat Product Review:
If Venetian Snares recorded with Thom Yorke and Björk, it may sound like Wolff Parkinson White’s debut for Bernd Friedmann’s label. Notably features Norah Jones up in it...
"A jazz drummer by trade, and producer of electronic music by fancy, Jochen Rueckert uses the Wolff Parkinson White alias for his programmed flights of imagination, often written on a laptop while on the road.
The six tracks of ’Small Favours’ effectively form an abridged vinyl edition of White’s ‘Favours’ CD album, his first solo release since 2014’s ‘ErSielhnum’ for Detroit Underground. His combinations of restless, fizzing rhythms with relatively straight-played vocals - ranging from smoky and soulful to brooding and introspective - quite clearly point to the influence of Björk and Thom Yorke as much as Flying Lotus and Venetian Snares, turning up canny pieces in the sublime tension between Natalie Beridze’s poised vocal and the skittish drums in ‘Sand’, and what sounds like a hyper Morcheeba in ‘Department of Failure’ starring Norah Jones (aka Ravi Shankar’s daughter)."
