Boomkat Product Review:
SONAMB is Vicky Clarke, and on her debut SLEEPSTATES she examines machine addiction and the sleep cycle, weaving together dislocated field recordings, DIY electronics, and sound sculptures.
Recorded between 2019 and 2022, SLEEPSTATES is an ambitious project that attempts to sonically represent the "cycle of dream transmissions from the electrical imaginary." Sound sculptor and electronic media artist Vicky Clarke, who won the Oram Award in 2020 for innovation in sound and music technology, collected recordings from Manchester, Berlin, and St. Petersburg, blending them with lockdown noise experiments and her own sculptural work, homemade sound generators, and concréte techniques. Not exactly calming, the album's title track is a glitchy experimental techno jerker that's not a million miles from Jan Jelinek or Deadbeat, but the record slips into the hypnogogic realm shortly afterwards.
Clark's sound world is precise and well-engineered, relying heavily on vocal transmissions that she peppers across each track. On 'Bad Gateway' the words become almost obtrusive, interrupting the flow of a track that wouldn't sound out of place on Raster. 'Lucid Dreams' is even better, considering the album's theme with vibrating Actress-like synth pulses and ice-cold voices.
