Boomkat Product Review:
After the inclusion of an epic compilation with this month's wire magazine it would appear Aussie experimentalists Room 40 are finally getting the attention they've deserved for so long. The label ticks all the right boxes : fabulously lavish packaging, gloriously innovative and unusual music and artists that haven't always had the exposure they've deserved. This latest offering is from DJ Olive who is better known for his startling collaborations with Kim Gordon on SYR5 and in her recent live shows. 'Sleep' is a continuous 50 minute piece that shows his deft skill in turntablism, much like Philip Jeck managing to manipulate samples from vinyl and mould them into gorgeous cascading drones and reverberating piano twinkles. His second album for the label, Olive has forged a post-ambient masterpiece, probably best compared to the finest work of William Basinski or 'Frame' era Shuttle358, with its drifting semi familiar tones lulling you into a trance-like state. There are moments of dense looped strings, gorgeous picked guitar and evocative piano; Sleep is a soundtrack to the best dream you never had. A huge recommendation, and without a doubt one of the finest ambient jaunts we will see this year.
