Skylla
Re-issue of the debut album from celebrated jazz bassist and vocalist Ruth Goller, with additional vocals from Lauren Kinsella and Alice Grant.
Working with different bass tunings for each track, Goller tried to challenge her instincts and muscle memory on 'Skylla' to wrench herself out of the jazz training that had guided her for years. She wanted to recapture the energy she'd had as a teenage punk musician, but channel it into a different mold. So on the opening track 'Often they came to visit...', her voice rises and falls as it follows the willowy bass notes - it's minimal, but not skeletal. Her sound crystallizes more on 'What's really important...', a two-part track that helped out by distorted, grungy bass drones and Grant's additional chorals, and when it mutates into a its second half, Goller's given the space to play with her vocal tones before she gives the spotlight to Kinsella.
