Boomkat Product Review:
Wackies take our head clean off with this achingly tight pair of psych-soul inflected bullets from 1975
Nigh on impossible to find 2nd hand - or at least dead expensive - Stepping Stones’ sole 7” works in the sore thumb of the Wackies constellation, which maybe explains why it was issued on their Aries sublabel. Produced and mixed by Wackies’ Lloyd Barnes with co-production by Maurice Jackson (Tafari Syndicate) the A-side is a real one, fixing flared funk licks and quizzical horns to a slow and heavy bass lick that underline proper soulful vocals and then that lonely trumpet (cornet?) line that just sends it off deep eastways, strongly recalling Ethiopiques jazzfunk vibes to these lugs right now.
